An agreement between an apprentice & his master
[craftsman] . Parents had to pay for a son to be
trained for a trade. At the end of a set number of
years perhaps as many as seven the apprentice would
be qualified, & called a journeyman carpenter or
whatever & might need to look for a job as he was
not guaranteed work by his master despite having worked hard & being exceptionally skilled.
