you cannot always tell rogue websites - always check terms & conditions when signing up but many (including certain commercial sites see your email address as a valid bit of property to sell to others) - I always suggest using Thunderbird email which avaoid many of the problems with Outlook as well as Firefox with NoScript extension installed
