Hi Andy
Assuming that you've got a subscription to Ancestry, this is the method I use----here's an example of one I've just located:
CLAGUE Caesar 36 Dou 4418 30 61
Find the exact census year you're searching---in this case, it's 1861 IOM ( selected from "UK census collection" by scrolling down the page. )
Ancestry frequently mistranscribes names, so it's important to enter no information at all in the names boxes.
Under "Piece" enter 4418
Under "Folio" enter 30
(Ignore the 61 )
Enter birthplace country, in this case it's IOM.
Enter Residence country and parish or town (in this case, IOM Douglas)
The vital bit is the birth year. In this case, Brian Lawson has given age as 36, so enter 1825 (no plus or minus needed )
Click "Search".
This throws up 2 possibilities----Elizabeth Quilliam and Casar Clague. So Caesar has been mistranscribed.
Click on "View image" and there's your page.
Hope this helps
