Re: Eleanor Costain nee Cannell d1849 MI look up,

Many thanks, Donna. Your help is greatly appreciated.

I was hoping to find that Thomas Costain of Ballachrink, husband of Eleanor nee Cannell, had died after the 41 census. I thought I'd found them in the 41 census at Ballachrink

COSTAIN Ellenor 40 Arb 1463/3 25 12
COSTAIN Thomas 50 Arb 1463/3 25 12
with their children Eliz 20, John 15, Thomas 15, Eleanor 12 and Catherine 10, plus
GAWNE Edwin 6 Arb 1463/3 25 12 ,
next door to Thomas's parents John Costain, farmer 70, Margery ( but written as Martha ) 65, and Thomas's brothers John 45, and James 25.

It was the James Costain I was researching, as he's mentioned as a pledge in the administration of the 1862 will of Henry Kermode ( son of Thomas Kermode d 1842 )

"Whereas the Ecclesiastical Court of this Diocese hath this day granted probate

of the last Will and

Testament of Henry Kermode of Rushen deceased to Richard Kneen husband of the

executrix Eleanor and in right of his said wife that executor herein named

And whereas James Costain of Ballachrink in the parish of Arbory and

James Kewley of Castletown in the parish of Malew have agreed to become pledges

for the said Richard Kneen for the due administration of the said Estate

according to law."

I found James Costain in 61, and traced him back to 51 and then 41, and was intrigued to find 6yr old Edwin Gawne living next door ( he was my g grandfather's brother in law, so I just had to carry on digging !)

The only fly in the ointment is the presence of a Thomas Costain, mason, age 50, in the household of Eleanor Costain, who, according to the MIs you've kindly just supplied, was widowed in 1834.

Have I got completely the wrong household for Eleanor Costain nee Cannell, or is the Thomas Costain age 50 someone who just happens to have the same name as her late husband ?

Don't worry, I'm not expecting an answer. I'll just put it down to an unsatisfying red herring.
