Thank you for response Frances. Long and complicated --
My Mary McCart/McCarthy has had me running around in circles for years. I am going to try again on this valuable message board to see if some suggestions can be made by the contributors. Mary arrived in Australia late 1850s, and had her family here. On birth certificates of first four children, Mary said that her birth place was Armagh Ireland. On birth certificates of next four children, Mary said that her birth place was Isle of Man. I thought I had struck gold with the 1841 census for Isle of Man with Hugh McCarty (30), wife (25) and four children, including a Mary (aged 2). All born "somewhere in UK" except for Mary and her brother, who were both born Isle of Man.
1851 census Isle of Man similar, but Hugh (father) is a widower at this stage.
1861 census Hugh has married Mary Downey. No children living at home.
In a small aged bible I have (here in Australia), handed down over the generations, there is written "Mary Downey". I presumed that my Mary had brought it to Australia with her.
Hugh died in June 1881, leaving an eight page will which I sent for. He willed household goods and any money to "my said wife" , to his daughter Catherine Troy, to his son Daniel McCarthy, to his granddaughter Lucy Troy, daughter of Catherine Troy, who now resides with my executor (Thomas Handley), to two grandsons Walter Pinkerton Handley and Thomas Henry Handley, sons of my daughter Mary Handley, to my Aunt Alice Hoir (or census says Alicia Horley). "I nominate constitue and appoint my son in law, Thomas Handley whole and sole executor of this last will and testament".
Sooo ... mention of daughter Mary Handley threw me. Were there two Marys, Mary Handley (daughter), and my Mary who had the bible. My Mary, lived and had approx. 8 children from the early 1860s, in Australia. She called one of her sons Hugh. She had the little old bible where is says Mary Downey (Downey was father Hugh's second wife). All a coincidence? All very complicated. Would appreciate any suggestions.

... unto my son Daniel McCarthy sum of ten shillings as a legacy
... unto my grand daughter Lucy Troy, daughter of said Catherine Troy who now resides with my executor (Thomas Handley) the sum of ten pounds as a legacy.
... unto my two grandsons Walter Pinkerton Handley and Thomas Henry Handley, sons of my daughter Mary Handley, the sum of fifty pounds each to be paid to them on their arriving at the age of twenty one years each respectively or sooner at the discretion of my executor.
... unto my Aunt Alice Hoir (or census Alicia Horley) who now resides with me, one feather bed and the sum of ten pounds as a legacy.
... all the rest residue and remainder of my estate property and effects both personal and ??? unto my executor absolutely and for ever.
I nominate constitute and appoint my son in law, Thomas Handley whole and sole executor of this last will and testament.
