Hugh Garrett (1776-1833), Master R.N. and Wesleyan Minister, married twice, and according to his Last Will & Testament dated 1833, his second wife was named “Margaret” (“And I do nominate and appoint my wife Margaret Garrett executrix of this….”)
Margaret’s Will dated 1866 refers to her brother “Evan GELL”. The IGI indicates a marriage between Margaret “Geel” and Hugh Garrett on 31 Jul 1828 Patrick, Isle of Man.
The following excerpt is found in Hugh’s Will:
“I give and bequeath to my daughter Ellen Bell wife of Wm Bell the sum of six
pence legacy. I give and bequeath to my daughter Margaret wife of Thos Cain the sum
of six pence as legacy. I give devise and bequeath to amongst all such children of "MY PRESENT
MARRIAGE" that shall be being at the time of my decease all the …..”
I believe therefore that Ellen and Margaret were the children of his first wife. His second wife (Margaret Gell/Geel) bore him 2 children named Hannah and Rebecca. (source: IGI)
A marriage entry located in the Liverpool Mercury dated Friday, August 15, 1828 indicates a “Mr. Hugh Garrett, sailing-master R.N. to Miss ANN GELL, of Baleby, Kirk Patrick.” Unfortunately it does not stipulate which day exactly the marriage occurred; only the date it was published in the paper, however, it is obvious this is referring to the same marriage.
My questions - Can Margaret and Ann be one and the same? Does anyone know the particulars of Hugh’s first marriage?
Thank you for any suggestions.
