officialdom was less pervasive then - he might have to provide a baptismal ref to enter school or to get married (but I'm not either were actually checked - eg the large number of boy sodiers who signed up under age) - the official copy of the baptismal registers was in my opinion because the IoM authorities need to answer English demands re old age pensions which dated from that period (in the Island these came post WW1)
