James Gelling the Shoemaker (for Mark Gelling)

Mark, I've been doing some digging on your ancestor James GELLING, bp 1818 son of John GELLING and Catharine COOIL. He's been discussed a bit in the past on this BB, late 2005. He's now been found in all the census's through 1881 and possibly 1891.

In 1841 he's at Park Lane, Liverpool at the home of John QUILLIAM 50 Shoemaker:
Jame [no 's'] GELLING 22 [occup blank] N = born elsewhere. The occupation of the 2 people above him were "Shoe'm Ap' and they were 13 & 14. Below was a 26-yr old Irishman "Shoem".

1846 he married an Irish girl "Eliza Cropen" which we think isn't a correct surname. Their first child Sarah (buried Braddan Dec 1847 age 1), was baptized 23 Aug 1846 at St Barnabas Douglas and the surname for Eliza is "CROSSER". That's not much better, than Cropen as there isn't a single Crosser in the IOM in 1841 or 1851, though lots in England.

The remainder of their children were born in Liverpool. You already have from Bruce Ingram (26 Oct 2005) their 1861 census under the name "GILLIAN". Eliza is misentered as "Ellen", but it's definitely them. In 1861 they are more properly transcribed in Liverpool.

Sometime in the 1860's they split, because they show up in separate homes in Douglas in 1871. James is boarding with John & Jane MOORE. I checked them out and it turns out that Jane Moore is James' sister bp 1809. She married John MOORE 12 Dec 1832 Braddan and I found 6 children.

Checking 1861 for the Moores, they are at Back Strand Street, Onchan, immediately above Catherine GELLING widow age 86 and her son John Gelling a Waiter? (I think - hard to read) age 36. So, this ought to be James' mother! Boarding with the Moores is a 21 year old Boatman named William BRIDEN (BRIDSON). More on him in a minute.

Brian's burial index has an 86 year old Catherine Gelling being buried at Braddan in 1858, which is 3 years before our Catherine shows up in 1861. There's no other old Catherine in the index for a long time after.

Following back to 1851, at Cattle Market Street, Douglas are:
John GELLING, Head Mar 75 Mason's Labourer, Isle of Man Braddan
Catherine GELLING, Wife Married 75 Isle of Man Douglas
John GELLING, Son 23 Laborer Isle of Man Douglas

1841 at Cattle Market Street has:
John GELLING 80 Lab Y
Jane GELLING 80 Lab Y [why is she "Jane"?]
John GELLING 15 Y
Robt BRIDSON 35 Boatman Y
Anne BRIDSON 30 Y [this should be Catherine]
Anne BRIDSON 2 Y
William BRIDSON 1 Y [he's the boatman with the Moore's in 1861]

Checking out William Bridson, he is the son of Robert BRIDSON and Catherine GELLING married 22 May 1837 Braddan and I found 6 children for them. Catherine is another sister of James. The plot thickens.

Back to James: in 1881 he is age 62 a Shoemaker in Douglas, with a 37-yo boarder named very clearly Ann BENGAFF b Douglas. That's a surname that doesn't show up anywhere.

In 1891 at 7 Quilliams Court Douglas there is a James Gelling Lodger Widr 67 Labourer born Isle of Man, at the home of a William McCrainey. That's a bit iffy because of the age (too low), occupation, and he's not a widower because Eliza dies in 1899 in Barrow in Furness. However, the information for the census-taker may have come from somebody else in the house, who didn't know much about him. Finally, there's a Braddan burial in 1 Dec 1897 age 76 which is a reasonable match.

One other curiosity to pursue. In the 1851 "Gillian" census there is a 23-year old lodger named "John Gillian" shoemaker. First thinking is that he's James' brother, but the brother John is with his mother and father above, and it's obviously a different person. So who is this John? I tried to find him elsewhere but didn't succeed. I bet he's related, though.
