Re: Catherine COWLE c1837-189? Lonan

Hi John
An Ann Morrison als Cowle md. my GGGfather Robert Lawson; she had a sister Catherine baptd 20th May 1832 who I think may fit. (the IGI gives her name as Cath Cawl). Parents were James Cowell 1792-1872 & Catharine Cowley 1794-1874; I have not tried to go further back yet.
In 1841 in Lonan at Intack by High Rd: HO_107_1464/2_21_p14; Lonan Dist_2:- James Cowel 50, Joiner;Catherine --do--, 45; John --do--, 20, Joiner; Margaret --do--, 14; James --do--, 10; Catherine --do--, 8; Sarah --do--, 5.
By 1851 Cath Cowle (18) was a House Servt at Gelling's Public Ho, Dgls Rd Onchan. [HO_ 107_2525_25a_p1; Onchan_2_1)
Her father James (59, joiner) was at Closeters Intack Lonan with children James (25) & Sarah (17). No Cath snr in 1851 but she re-appears in 1861 & 1871. James d. 1872 & Cath d. 1874 - summary of her Will below.
William Killip & Catherine als Cowel featured in censuses from 1861 to 1891 living in Rencell, which fits with the wills; In 1901 William Killip (Widower, 64) was in Tent Rd Old Laxey with his son William J (U, 34)
Lonan Burials Register:

Summary of Will of Catherine Cowle, d.~10th Apr 1875 (I didn't have time to make a full transcription -hence not posted).
She bequeathed two dwelling houses to her son James (by then the Heir at Law; John Cowle having d.1846): A dwelling house and garden in Rhin Cell (sic), together with the dwelling house and premises where she presently resided. However James was in America, and if he did not return to claim his inheritance, then the house etc in Rencell would be occupied for eight years by her daughter Catherine Killip and her husband William, then it was to be sold and the proceeds divided between daughters Catherine Killip, Margaret Cowley w/o Thomas and Ann Lawson (als Morrison als Cowle) w/o Robert Lawson. The house etc where she lived was bequeathed to her granddaughter Mary Cowley als Morrison w/o William Cowley “who reside with me at present”. This was probably “nr Chibbyr Pheric” because the property was “adjoining the estate of Grawe property of Thos Kelly on the NE, lands of Jms Hampton on SSW”
All this was provisional depending on James Cowle's return– if he did not then William Cowley and Mary his wife were to pay one pound to daughter Jane w/o John Fotheringill.
The residue of the estate was to go to William Cowley and his wife Mary.
In 1881 Willian Cowley and wife Mary were living in “Pt of Grawe”, enumerated after “Poolvilla” and before “Glen Roy Mine” – which fits with Chibbyr Pheric.
Lonan Burials:COWELL, James, Chibber-Pherric, 60 yrs,28MAR1889”. There is a Will, 1889 Lon 143 – recently posted on Brian's will site. So - did the evil uncle return and claim the maid’s inheritance? - The answer is .............YES!
Hope this helps, I will try to go back further with the Cowels & Cowleys sometime soon. If you need more precise details of the censuses 1841-1901, please let me know
