Re: William Gelling & Jane Cain
In Response To: Re: Corkill/Gelling ()

I have a lot more now on Martha Corkill als Gelling's parent's family now than I had when I posted May 31. I'll summarize it here.

William GELLING married Jane CAIN 17 Oct 1829 at Kirk German. According to census's, William GELLING was born ca 1805 at Braddan and Jane CAIN was born ca 1808 at German. Their first 3 children were born in German (Peel) the 4th in Braddan, and the rest at Marown (mostly Baldwin Village). William was a Smith in 1841, a farmer and smith in 1851 and by 1861 he was a farmer of 40 acres at Ballagrane Farm. Then in 1871 he's a publican at Baldwin. There's no burial on Brian's index but there's a 1873 Marown Will that could be his.

Jane was a widow in 1881, with one of Martha's children living with her. Again no burial, but there's an 1885 Marown Will.

I haven't spent much time on William's parentage, other than to see there's a lot to choose from. In 1861 a John GELLING, widower 58 Miller born Braddan was visiting the family. Perhaps he's an older brother.

The IGI offers 2 possibilities for Jane CAIN bp German: I like the first one the best.
18 Oct 1808 d of Wm CAIN and Elinor KEWIN
18 Oct 1806 d of Wm CAIN and Mgt GOLDSMITH.

They had 14 children (not 13 as I said before):

1. Eleanor b 1830 died after 1901. Married widower Isaac CANNELL (a Joiner) 1851 and had 14 children. Isaac was previously married to Eleanor CAIN who died 1849 - 3 children. Isaac also lived past 1901. They lived very close to her parents in Baldwin, Marown.

2. Jane Ann b 1832 died 1865 W.Derby. She married William TEARE Millwright in 1854 at Marown. They had 4 children, 1 died infant. In 1861 at Toxteth Park they had Jane's sister Martha GELLING age 14 Scholar visiting with them. Boarding was a William GELLING 24 Iron Smith, but I don't know if he's related. There's a death in England 1861 William GELLING 35 just prior to the census that could be him. In subsequent census's the children are staying with their grandparents or other relatives. I'm not sure yet, but they may have been orphans.

3. William b 1833 d 1855 age 22. He was a carpenter.

4. James b 1835 d 1900, a Blacksmith. He lived in Liverpool and Barrow in Furness for awhile, then moved back to Douglas as a widower by 1891. He married Catharine CORRIN in 1872 Braddan and they had 5 children, 4 of which lived past infancy. James was widowed in 1886.

5 Margaret b 1836, likely died infant
6 Robert b 1837, likely died infant
7 Margaret b 1839, likely died infant.

8 Ann b 1841, d after 1901. Married Henry QUILLIAM 1863 and had 13 children. She was widowed in 1895. Lived briefly in Ulverston area in mid 1870s. Otherwise lived in Marown, Onchan, Lonan and Braddan.

9 Elizabeth age 7 in 1851 but not in IGI. Nothing more found.

10 Catharine b 1845 d 1907 Her husband was Thomas FISHER but I can't find the marriage, ca 1867. 4 children. They mainly lived in Liverpool, but were in Michael in 1871.

11 Martha b 1846 d 1918 Marown. Married Robert CORKILL 1868 and they had 13 children. They lived in Aldingham Ulverston for several years in the 1880's. Otherwise they lived in Marown

12 Emily Margaret b 1848. She is 3 in 1851 but nothing more found.

13 Dinah b 1851 d 1816. Married 1870 to John Thomas QUAYLE in Marown, 12 children. Like Catherine, they were in Michael in 1871 and then moved to Dalton in Furness.

14 John Caine b 1853 d 1914.
He was a Driller and Lead Miner. Married Sarah Jane KELLY in 1876 Braddan, 7 children, two of whom were born in Barrow in Furness.
