Jan, as the Salvation Army arranged his adoption wouldn't they still have the placement records?

It would also be legally recorded at the GRO. See: www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/adoptions/
The law was changed a few years ago to allow birth relatives to have access to the registration details to find out the adopted name and address, etc.
