There were Steel Works, ship building and iron mining in the Barrow area - major shipyard etc that employed many Manx - there was an active Barrow Manx Society c. 1920 eg see www.manxnotebook.com/mquart/mq25104.htm Manx mining declined quickly after 1890's and many emigrated
