the date is quite important as emigration to North Armerica was much more common towards the end of the 18th C rather than at the beginning - post 1765 there were comments that many had emigrated including to America, many Manx served in the Navy (willingly or not as one option to avoid gaol in England if caught smuggling was to 'volunteer' for the navy), some seemed to settle in West Indies tho this was somewhat unhealthy but did seem to offer potentially high rewards - there are a couple of wills of 'strangers' that explicity state the family members were in North America - possibly the pre1765 trade links gave them an entree. Geoff's Kaighin's were it seems linked with the strong Quaker presence there and possibly with the linen trade.
