Two related questions:
1) I’m still looking for the marriage of Elizabeth Ann Starkey, daughter of William Starkey, labourer, to a Mr Clarke between 1891 and 1932, possibly after 1901. I think she then predeceased him and was buried in 1932 in Santon with her first husband John Collister:-
“In memory of John Collister who departed this life March 19, 1891, aged 31 years.
Also Willie and Edwin, children of the above who died in infancy.
Also his wife Elizabeth Ann (Clarke) buried November 1932”.
Lawson Burials: CLARKE, Elizabeth Ann, 73, Santon, 7 Nov 1932
Perhaps a newspaper obit would name her husband.
2) In the 1891 Douglas census Elizabeth A. Callister is a widow aged 32 born Braddan. (1859), and I’m wondering if this is her in 1901. If it is, that would narrow the possible date range down by 10 years and probably puts the marriage to unknown Clarke beyond the scope of Brian’s index.:-
Vessel S.S. Ellan Vannin, Ramsey/Whitehaven RG13/5307 f.190
(includes)
no.2 Elizabeth Collister, crew, widow, f, 41, stewardess, born Douglas [1860]
The stewardess who was lost with the Ellan Vannin in 1909 was also a Mrs Callister (Eliza Thompson of Marown), the widow of Lewis Kneale Collister, according to Manx Notebook, but I think the 1901 Mrs Collister is a different one because:-
- LK Collister wasn’t buried until May 1901, so the stewardess presumably wouldn’t have been a widow at the time of the 1901 census (Brian’s burial index)
- The 1901 stewardess was born in Douglas/Braddan not Glen Vine (Manx Notebook)
- The 1901 widow Collister would have been about 10 years older than LK Collister (not impossible, I know)
So, do records for IOMSPCo crew for this period still exist?
Any ideas anyone?
