I wonder if anyone can help me unravel a particular family found in the Isle of Man census 1841, 1851, 1861, and 1871.
In 1841 kirk Michael, I find the Cowley family consisting of William Cowley age 65, Christian Cowley age 52, Ann Cowley age 27, Mary Quayle age 14 (my ancestor) and John Cowley age 5. No relationships are listed, but I would assume that William and Christian are husband and wife, Ann Cowley a daughter, Mary Quayle unknown and John Cowley perhaps a grandchild. Above them are listed Thomas Cowley, age 48 and Eleanor Cowley age 65. Maybe John belongs to Thomas?? or Ann??
In 1851 kirk Michael, We find Christian Cowley age 62 -head listed with William Cowley age 70, however William is reported as her brother.
In 1861 kirk Michael, Christian Cowley now 74, is again head of household, but now Mary Ann Quayle age 34 appears as her daughter and we have John James Kerrin age 7- a grandchild.
And in 1871 Christain Cowley is head, now 83,
James Gelling 54 -son in law (my anscestor), Mary Gelling 44 - daughter (my anscestor), William joseph Gelling 6- grandson (my anscestor), Thomas Q Gelling 5, Grandson, Sarah J Gelling 3- granddaughter, and John James Kerrin 17, grandson.
I have tried to find Mary Ann Quayle in the 1851 census, but cannot find a viable match.
I guess my question to anyone who might know, is how did Mary Anne end up a Quayle? Is Christian Cowley a married name, maiden name? Anyone know who Mary Anne's father might be? or who Anne Cowleys true parents are? Are Thomas and Eleanor related? Any help is appreciated!
Many Thanks!
