Hi Clare. I hadn't heard there were LEWIS families on the Isle of Man.
My great-grandparents were John "Stanley" LEWIS, b1859 Liverpool, and Mary Elizabeth CORKILL, b1860 Liverpool. They were "shipped to Canada" ~1874 and married in Nova Scotia in 1879. They migrated to Massachusetts in 1881 and raised 13 children in Stoneham, MA.
Going backwards, Stanley's parents were John LEWIS, born Liverpool 1830's and Isabella BURROWS, born Skirton 1830's.
John's parents were Richard LEWIS, born ~1803 Shrewsbury, Shropshire, and Elizabeth TROUGHTON, born ~1806 (?) Cheshire. I think they married in Liverpool ~1825.
I have not gone back further than that, but there were several LEWIS families in Shropshire in the late 1700's.
Richard and Elizabeth had 4 sons live to adulthood, and they all lived in Liverpool and were clerks and had children. This would have been the 1850's and 1860's. Information on them is in the archives of the Liverpool List at www.rootsweb.com
(I have never found any descendants of my great-grandfather's 3 uncles.)
