The IoM is NOT part of England but 'an ancient country unto itself' - Manx records are held in Douglas - civil registration started late on the Island (1877/8) and prior to this date BMD's were recorded by the churches (mostly Established church - Anglican - coming under York (the actual registers are now mostly in the Manx Museum). Because of the lack of civil registration the Manx Goverment arranged for a careful copy of all extant parish registers around 1911 - this official copy was kept by the Rolls Office and was filmed by the Mormons in 1944 and forms the basis of the Manx IGI - the mormons also filmed the early civil registration documents and both these and parish register copies are accessible via Mormon FHCs.
