Re: Martha Mcgain
In Response To: Re: Martha Mcgain ()

Hello Michael, thanks for replying, the lady you contacted was inall possibility my cousins exwife Trudi, My grandfather was born Tom mcgain in Birkenhead a week after the 1891 census, and was adopted by Job Harding some branches of my family stayed as Harding and some decided to keep the Mcgain name as Mcgain -Hardings.Toms birth certificate names his mother as Mrs Martha mcgain, and his father as William Mcgain civil engineer.I have no doubt that Martha was not married. The only Martha Mcgain I have found anywhere in the relevant timespan of records is listed as a parlour maid at Ballaquaine house aged 35 in the 1901 census for the Isle of Man. Whether she is 'my' Martha Mcgain I feel we shall never know, although family stories tell of Martha working at the 'Big House', perhaps she went to Birkenhead to give birth to Tom and then returned to the Isle of Man after his adoption.Unfortunately I never met my grandfather Tom so cannot verify anything at all.Thank you for your interest
