Re: Too many Christians
In Response To: Re: Too many Christians ()

I recently wrote on the board about Edward Christian & Jane Corkill for someone else.
I wrote:
Edward Christian & Jane Corkill married Maughold 30 Jun 1838. Edward had consent of his father. (So was under the age of 21.)

Maughold bapts:
John Edward [son of] Edward Christian & Jane Corkill [bapt] Parish Church 19 May 1840
Cath Jane Edward Christian/ Jane Corkill Parish Church 16 Mar 1845
Edward Edward Christian/ Jane Corkill Parish Church 17 Oct 1847.

You can see the non-Maughold ones on the IGI Familysearch.org

In 1851 they are in Lezayre, Ballabroie: Edward aged 35 Farm labourer, wife Jane aged 40, John aged 10, William 7, Kitty J. 5, Edward 3, Hugh 4 mths, all b. Maughold except for Hugh (Ewan) b. Lezayre.

I think Edward had increased his age by a couple of years because Jane was several years older. As he was underage in 1838, and b.Maughold, the most likely bapt is Edward son of Hugh Christian & Catharine Moore bapt Parish Church 25 Jan 1818, which would have made him aged 20 at his marriage.

Ewan Christian & Catharine Moore married Maughold 28 Dec 1807.

The names Ewan and Hugh were used interchangeably, with Hugh gradually being used instead of Ewan.
