Here is a bit more info that I have accumulated so far, John Craling is in 1841 census as John Curling living Tower Street Dudley, married Anne Hipkiss in 1842. in 1851 census brother Edward also from IOM had joined him in the family Tailor business - still living Tower St. Edward married Ellenor Hipkiss in 1856 - this was probably Anne's sister! Anne Crayling nee Hipkiss died in 1853 and John Craling re-married Jane ? c1855 (not traced - but from Liverpool) and John died 1884 - Edward continued at Tower street at least until 1891 (census) but died 1901 in the local workhouse.
John Craling would be my G/G/Grandad on maternal side.
I would love to delve further back but it seems that there were many possible spellings for this surname, 'Craling' was predominent in later Census and with children thereafter, but I think Crellin is likely origin - I think this was a well used IOM name.
