Re: Gelling/Cavendish/Shimmin
In Response To: Gelling/Cavendish/Shimmin ()

I can help a bit. John Gelling & Isabella Cavendish married 18 Nov 1788 at Braddan and had 10 children according to the IGI: Mary 1788, John 1790, Robert 1792, William 1794, Thomas 1799, Margaret 1801, Sarah 1803, Isabella 1805, Richard 1807 and James 1810.

I'm just starting to collect information on the Gellings outside my family tree, so don't have a lot yet. Of the 10 children, you have kindly filled in Sarah for me. The next daughter Isabella married Philip SHIMMIN; refer to a message on this board by Don Goff dated 13 Aug 2000 for more on them.

I've done a bit of independent research on a Richard Gelling who married Elizabeth HINCHCLIFFE 21 Dec 1835 at Manchester Cathedral and had one daughter named Victoria Isabella born 1840 at Toxteth Park (bp 4 years later at St. George Douglas, and married Aaron BROOKES in 1858 Liverpool - 7 children). Based on census's, Richard fits well to the one bp in 1807, though I don't know for certain. He died in early 1881, his wife in 1877 and they didn't seem to be living together latterly.

The youngest, James, was buried 1 Jul 1814 at Braddan.

See also a series of notes about William GELLING who married Margaret QUINE 2 Nov 1816 Braddan, and other related people. These notes involved quite a few people mainly under the title "Message for Marg" in Sept & Oct 2007. One of the strong candidates for this William is the 4th child of John Gelling & Isabella Cavendish, b 1794. A regular visitor to this site, Sylvia P, is connected to the Cavendish's and will probably come into this discussion when she sees it.

At this point, we don't know the parents of John Gelling. Unless we get lucky, such as an informative Will not seen yet, we may have great difficulty in figuring him out. Every Gelling family had a John in it and there are a lot of them. I did a search of the 1841 census with no success, so it's likely both John & Isabella had died by then.
