Re: John Scarffe Lonan
In Response To: Re: John Scarffe Lonan ()

Yes, his story has been written in the IOMFHS Feb 2005 Journal by Pauline Cowin of Peel. The really interesting part is his (wife?) known by him as Harriet ANDREWS who erected the memorial in Walhalla in 1885 She apparently was known as "Mrs Henrietta Scarff" in the lands around the Gippsland goldfield in Victoria, and she died at age 109 in 1934. She corresponded with a "Miss Ann Scarff of Lonan" for many years.

I've been researching the Scarffe's over the last little while, and used this article as a reference. There are some minor date errors in the article which I've deduced, but on the whole it matched well.

John Scarffe was baptized 13 Mar 1836 in Lonan, eldest son of John Scarffe & Catharine KINRADE (md 29 May 1835 Maughold). He is age 5 and age 15 in the 1841/51 census's and doesn't appear after that, which gives the time range for when he went to Australia.

I can't find John's first brother William (bp 1838) after 1851 but his younger brother Thomas bp 1839 married Ann BOYD in 1866 Lezayre and worked in the lead mines near Laxey. They had 9 children and they both lived well into the 1900s. Thomas' eldest daughter Annie Louisa was the correspondent of Henrietta from Australia. She did not marry and died aged 87 years in 1957 (MI in Lonan Old Yard).

John Scarffe's only sister and the youngest b 1841, Mary Ann, md John CALLOW in 1865 Braddan (also a lead miner) and had 3 children.

The mother Catharine (nee Kinrade) died in Apr 1841 (perhaps childbirth with Mary Ann) and the kids were scattered about in the 1841 census. Father John Scarffe then married Ellinor HOGG in 1846; she died in 1880 and he died in 1886 a year after his Australian miner son. I've been able to find nearly all the people up to 1901 as part of my Scarffe research project.

The father John was bp 15 Jun 1800 at Lonan, son of William SCARFF & Ellinor GELLING md 21 Apr 1798 Lonan. Ellinor was sister to my 3xg-grandfather John Gelling, so is a particular interest of mine.

William Scarff was the only son of Daniel SCARFF & Jane KILLIP bp 27 Mar 1763. Ms. Cowin's article places William's burial as 8 Oct 1810 Lonan but I don't know how she knows that as opposed to, for example, the burial 8 Oct 1829. No dates on either burial, unfortunately. She is right about Ellinor Gelling being the daughter of David Gelling (& Bahee Christian) 6 Jan 1767 but the 2 Apr 1853 Lonan burial of Eleanor Scarffe from Douglas age 93, I think belongs to the Eleanor Scarffe als KEWLEY, widow to Thomas Scarff, as she is in the 1851 census age 90 with her son William. My old theory was Ellinor Scarff als Gelling was the "Widow Scarff a pauper aged 80 years" bd Lonan 11 Aug 1848,. However, I now think that person was Ann Scarff als KELLY, widow of John Scarff (s of Philip) because Ann is listed in the 1841 census age 70 Pauper, with daughter Elizabeth and granddaughter Isabella. So, at the moment I don't have burials for either William Scarff or his wife Ellinor.

I have lots more on the Manx Scarffe's but it's still tentative in places. Basically, they all derive from three brothers (John 1717-1747, Philip 1728-1805, and Daniel 1731-1808), children of John SCARFF & Margaret QUARK (md ca 1717 likely Lonan, just before the registers start), and grandchildren of William SCARFF & Margaret CHRISTIAN md ca 1690 who just had the one child John. I think William could be bp 23 Oct 1643 Braddan son of Philip, but there's no proof. We do know that William was the middle husband of 3 of Margaret and he died in 1692/3.

It seems the only Manx-connected Scarff's that don't come from the above lines are the SCALF family of the US, who have very strong evidence they derive from an Edward SCARFF who was an indentured servant transported to America in 1663. I've traced as many ancilliary lines as I could find, and it seems all the other SCARFF male lines died out.

I'd be happy to help anybody sort out their Scarffe ancestors, if you care to drop me a line. I'd also be pleased to hear from anybody who can shed some light on some of mysteries on the Scarffe's, such as which John belongs to which, etc. I've done up a tentative tree but I'm still moving the ones from 1790-1830 around from sub-tree to sub-tree as I find out more.

One last thought. It seems to me most Manx spelled it "Scarffe" but the English spelled it "Scarff".
