Re: mylchreest/murray/Faragher
In Response To: Re: mylchreest/murray/Faragher ()

There seems to be a bit of confusion over the Murray/Mylchreest link. My notes suggest that Alice Wattleworth of Ballawattleworth near Peel had an illegitimate daughter by John Murray, Constable of Peel Castle. The child was Alice Murray, b. 1745. Alice Senior was then married off and went to live in Arbory (?). Alice junior (brought up at Ballawattleworth???) was married in 1768 to Thomas Mylchreest of Ballaharra, near St. John's in German parish, 1768. She was the 2nd wife, the 1st being Grace Woods. Alice died in 1802 and Thomas married again for the third time. THe 3rd wife lived on to after 1841, hence William had to live on the secondary estate at Lonan.Thomas and Grace left only daughters, and I descend from the eldest son of Thomas and Alice, William Mylchreest of Ballameanagh, Lonan (1769 - 1845). The younger son was Thomas, sadler of Ramsey. The daughters were Alice (3rd) who married Robert Christian of Lewaigue, Maughold, and Euphemia. m. Quine.
My descent is through the Gells of Patrick.
Texan relations commissioned a pedigree in the 1960's which appeared to show that John Murray was the grandson, (tho' illegitimate himself) of the 1st Marquess of Athol, and thus he was a cousin of the Duke who became Lord of Man in 1736. No guarantees offered, but if correct, this 'gateway' ancestor gives lot of Manxies a descent from Wm the Conqueror!!!
