as part of a possible paper on Manx illegitmacy (attitudes etc) I found the case of Jane Stephen of ballacurry in 1841 (daughter of Chelsea Pensioner John) unmarried, she had at least 6 illegitimate children by 1841 (tho the eldest Rebecca died in 1842) - only 1 has a father's name in the IGI (not used in 1841 and a different name in 1851) - by 1851 those present have different surnames - can any one add addtional information about this family - was she an unfortuneate taken advantage of or an early womens libber who defied convention ?
