I have today found a letter from an Elsie Smith (nee Moore) of Colby, addressed to my Great Grandmother (who was Manx) in Manchester. Elsie called her Aunt Annie (her real name was Henrietta Boulter, Nee Moore born in Onchan). It was dated 1st December 1966. It was sent originally to acknowlege my birth in Manchester. But there are some other interesting snippets I would like to share and see if anyone can shed any light as neither my Great Uncle who had the letter or myself know this Elsie.
Elsie lived at the cottages, the Level, Colby, Isle of Man in 1966 when the letter was sent, we asume she had retired there as she was 77 at the time and was born on the Island. She talks about a Cousin May in Castletown - who she goes shopping there she talks about going to visit our cousin May so could be related to the Moore side. May was John Armroyds daughter.
My Great Grandmother must have asked her about the Level Inn at Colby, which she says 'is not there now, or rather the place is there but it is a private house and has been for years, it is just across the road from where we live, a corner house, a few days before I received your letter, Mona and I passed that house and she had said that, that house used to be an inn and now it was a cousin of Mona's husbands that owned it.'
Not sure who Mona is but she must be related in some way.
The Inn may have had some relevance to the family?
There was a shop my great grandmother must have mentioned in Colby where a bus shelter then stood.
Elise Smith was born Elsie Moore in 1890 and was the daughter of Emma and William S Moore (Born 1866 Isle of Man)
