many thanks - clears up a minor mystery - always refered to as J E Bruton except in 1894 directory which has John - both James & John seemed to be well known photographers of the South African scene until the mid 1890's - thus it looks as if James (the elder) came to the Island (possibly with some intervention of Gov Loch who had been been appointed to the Cape) whilst son John remained in Africa.
