The earliest record I have of name Clews is an 1828 marr at Malew of John Clewes & Ellen Quayle - they are not in the 1841 census (& only 1st child Anne bapt in Malew 1828-02-25) but the 1851 census entry explains - he is then in Hope St Castletown with several children - a Pensioner from the 50th reg of Foot most children born England but the last Sydney born - guess where - in Sydney! - you should have an enjoyable time traceing that family. My guess he was stationed at Castletown c.1827.
Also two MI's at Ballure Chapel (Ramsey) are:
In loving memory of Annie Selina, eldest and dearly loved daughter of Ralph Acton & Selina Clews of Rock Ferry, Cheshire, formerly of Newcastle, Staffordshie, born June 25, 1861, died at Ramsey, Sept 3, 1893.
Also in loving memory of her dear brother Henry Alcock Clews, born April 14, 1871, died of yellow fever, at Havana, Cuba, Sept 22, 1895. This looks like a second Clews family.
