Old Braddan yard surrounds the old church and has been expanded a couple of times.
Mid 19th C there was no further room to expand so they moved about half a mile away on the Strang road - this is New Braddan (New Braddan church is however next door to Old Braddan) - within this there are three main areas - that by the Strang road around the mortuary chapel is the oldest part but it then expanded back and sideways towards Tromode Road which became the main extrance.
At the end of the 19th C the pressure on Braddan was reduced by the opening of the Douglas Borough Cemetery (its mortuary chapel was modified some 30 years ago to incorporate the all-Island cerematorium) - a new cemetery opened about 2 years ago at Ballafletcher as the DBC was full.
