In 1881 John Hudson, widower, is described as an "unemployed mine engine driver".
This would indicate that the term "engineer" in the earlier censuses indicated that he was the operator of a steam engine at the mines, either a pumping or winding engine.

The 1881 census also gives his birth place as "England" followed by some very feint writing which seems to consist of a town/village and the county of Cumberland.
