During the 2nd world war it was common for newly married couples to be separated for several years after marriage - many couples got married before the husband was sent overseas, in the Navy it was common to be away for a considerable time especially if the husband was sent out to the Far East. This could explain the time difference between marriage and firstborn birth. In my case my in-laws got married five years before my wife's birth as he was sent out to Malaysia, returning after the end of the Malaysian emergency.
