Hello. I last posted a (new) message last June. For today I'd just like to say that I continue to look for more information about the large family of:
John CORKILL and Esther CORKILL (maiden name) who married in 1822 in the Lezayre Parish. They reportedly had 10 children, and I am descended from their son, Evan, born there in 1827.
Last fall I heard from a woman who thinks she is descended from their daughter, Margaret.
Evan was a Master Mariner, and in 1852 he married in Liverpool, and married Elizabeth QUAYLE from Whitehaven, Cumbria / Cumberland. They had 7 children in Liverpool, and I am descended from their daughter, Mary, who was born in Liverpool in 1860.
I have heard that there were many QUAYLE families on the IOM, but I have no idea whether the family in Whitehaven was directly related to them. I think I received information on Elizabeth's probable family; it might be posted on the Cumbria or Cumberland Mailing Lists at www.rootsweb.com
Mary CORKILL and her 4 younger siblings (all Ages 15 to 3) were sent to Canada in 1874 and 1875. (More information is on the "British Home Children" Mailing List at www.rootsweb.com ) Last summer I found out that their older brother went to Canada in 1873. The other older brother died as a child. (I am corresponding with a lady in British Columbia who is descended from the older brother there.)
The oldest son of John and Esther also moved to Liverpool, and John (son) was the person who took in his brother's children when their mother died (1873). Evan was "away at sea" at the time.
I have found out that Evan was still alive in 1899, and that was over 20 years after his 6 children went to live in Canada. Since he was a "world traveler," I would very much like to find out if he ever visited his children, or whether he corresponded with them. Through his 3 daughters, he had "many" grandchildren. I don't think his 2 youngest sons had any children (not sure of the youngest). I would have to look through my notes to remind myself of how many children his oldest son had.
Thank you for your time.
Betty (near Lowell, MA, USA)
P.S. Thank you to all the researchers who have provided me with valuable information for the last couple of years !!!
I did very little research on all of my family-tree since June 2006, and am just now trying to get back into the swing of things !
P.S.2 Mary C ORKILL married another "British Home Child" in Nova Scotia in 1879. He was John "Stanley" LEWIS, b1859 in Liverpool. They probably met in the "Liverpool Sheltering Homes" in 1873 when it opened. In 1881 they migrated to Massachusetts and had 13 children. I am descended from their son, Silas.
