I stumbled across this message about RootsChat.com
I am totally biased I'm afraid as I am one of the administrators!

Without blowing our trumpets too loud though, the thing that makes it a little more useful for research is the ability to include images in messages (like difficult handwriting, pictures of gravestones, buildings, or even scans of census pages).
