The steamer Lismore was owned by the City of Cork Steampacket Co and was carrying livestock and general cargo between Irish ports and Manchester and Birkenhead. It sank off Waterford and only 1 of the crew of 19 was saved. He was a Wexford seaman called Carley. According to him, on the night of Thursday 10th July 1924 the ship began to list to the port. The Captain ordered the boats to be lowered but before this could be done the ship turned turtle. Amongst those that perished was a relation of mine, Thomas Nelson Watterson, who was a 32 year old Port Erin resident. Other Manxmen who died were the Captain, John Sayle from Castletown, aged 58 and William Gale from Port Erin, aged 30.
