Re: John Evander SMITH
In Response To: John Evander SMITH ()

Thank you very much for your suggestions and comments.
When I looked at my posting, the middle is missing so I will print it again.

"The Isle of Man is the place of my nativity - The town of Douglas the principle city, location in the Irish Sea. I left my family in Haven, England at which place I was bound an apprentice to Anthony Smith, a sea Captain in the year 1810. He was Commander of an English vessel called the 'Friendship' came to the United States in October 1819. Landed in New York City."

There is a Haven England, it is on the east coast of England. I wonder if captain Anthony Smith might of been a relative. It is strange to go clear to Haven from the Isle of Man. I don't know much about how ships were run in the early 1800's but could he of been about 10 or 12 when he went to sea as an apprentice? That would mean he was born on the Isle of Man about 1800.

I guess the next step would be to try to find out what kind of ship it was.

If there were few Englishmen on the Isle of Man where did most of the population come from? I was told by an English friend of mine that the Isle of Man is a beautiful place and she and her family would go there for holidays.

Thanks again for your help. I would really like to find out about my mothers Great Grandfather and his family.
