James Hales is shown as a tailor (and keeper of a Lodging house) in Duke St Douglas in Quiggins 1836 guide (he went on to run a drapers shop); he was also a founder member of the Rechabites on the Island and also a leading Wesleyan Local Preacher (some info available on my pages) - would seem strange for a son to go to USA at age 17 if father had a successful business
I cant find a George Hales mentioned though many references to Hales family in later directories
try plugging Hales into
