You can do 99% of research off island - I use the microfilmed wills (the originals are only available if the microfims are unreadable), copies of the same films are available via the FHC's, likewise the filmed parish registers (1911 official copy).
The major item only available at Manx Museum are the land records but I'm not sure they would help much in this case
