At this point I can only make a guess.

As Susan has pointed out it looks as if two different mothers are involved, both of which had several illegitimate children.

The census extracts would seem to bear this out.

If you are dealing with illegitamices then there is the problem that the children were usually baptized or registered under the mother's name but very often would later be known by the father's.
