I’ve been researching my CLARKE line and have been trying to find James CLARKE in each census year.
In the 1841 IOM Census I find him in Andreas, Balla Coarty?:
Elizabeth Leace 35 Spinner
William Leace 12
Jane Corlett 25 Spinner
Ann Corlett 6
Cesar Cowle 14
Thomas? Cowle 1
James Clarke 4
Any ideas on how all of these people might be related? I’m guessing Elizabeth Leace is the mother of James CLARKE.
In the 1851 IOM Census I find, in Bride:
James Kelly Head 45 Farm Lab Born: Douglas
Elizabeth Kelly Wife 48 Born: Bride
James Clarke Son 15 Born: Bride
Sarah Teare Visitor 4 Born: Bride
I’m guessing that Elizabeth has remarried and that James CLARKE is the step-son of James Kelly. Might Sarah be a grand-daughter of Elizabeth? Or why would they have such a young visitor?
In the 1861- and 1871 I find James married to Catherine RADCLIFFE. She died in 1878 (thanks, Brian) and James is in the 1881 Census as a widow.
By 1891 he is listed as married and there is another child in the family, Frances E. CLARKE, born about 1883. However, there is no wife recorded with the family in the 1891 census. And in the 1901 Census he is listed as a widow again.
Any ideas on who his second wife, and mother of Frances E., might have been? (I’ve checked Brian’s website and can’t seem to find anything that fits.)
