I have come across a reference to an obituary in the Manx Sun for Saturday 22nd March 1851 as follows:
"Cavendish, Mrs, Died at Ballaugh Village Wed. last, Wife of Edward Cavendish, commonly known as Ned-e-Niart"
1. Can anyone help with the meaning of 'e niart'? The best I can do with my Cregeen's 1835 dictionary is 'the mighty'.
2. If he was 'commonly known' as this, has anyone come across him or this name before? It would be nice to know if there are any surviving references to him, folk memories or whatever. Or perhaps it was just a family nickname. Any ideas?
