Eric, what was his date of birth [or rough dob], and what was his father's name, for indexes?
Many people landed in Victoria and went on to other states. On that website I gave you last night there are 67 William Whites arriving, with ages given - and that is just for unassisted immigrants! Also do you know whether he was travelling with wife and family, which would identify him if her name is also given [not just "Mr & Mrs"]. If so what was her name and rough age? Also, when were they last on record in the IOM?
These are the "W.E. Whites":
WHITE W E A SEP 1880 SIAM F 183 001
WHITE W E 23 SEP 1883 GARONNE B 422 005
WHITE W E - SEP 1883 GARONNE B 422 005

There are also several "W"s as well as the 67 Williams.
Assisted immigrants to Vic. have 37 entries for William White [with ages]. http://proarchives.imagineering.com.au/index_search.asp?searchid=24
That national index URL I gave you last night which has a lot of WW1 enlistment details has this:

Does that NOK [next of Kin] "B White Patrick" mean anything to you?
There is a digital copy of his army record at: http://naa12.naa.gov.au/scripts/imagine.asp?B=1851332&I=1&SE=0
