In Maughold deaths from smallpox were marked X in the parish register. e.g. in 1764 were recorded:

Will XTIAN & his Sone John both of ym perished togeather in Ramsey Burne Jan 27 1689

Will QUARK in ye height of a feaver went out of Bed & was found drowned in a doob of water below his owne house Feb 20 1695

Margt CATTIN als WOODS. She was ye first Corps yt entered in on ye new doore opened in ye West end of ye Church Jul 7 1708

Margt KERRUISH a poor Woman who got up out of Bed in Willm CREETCHes house Dec 31st and was found Dead in Cornah River Jan 11th and Bury’d at Six Oclock at Night Jan 12 1746

Joney Daught of Wm CALLOW of B’Creggan Aged 21 Went to bed well and was found Dead before Midnight Feb 3rd Oct 6 1749

William KERRUISH Son of John Keruish of Ballafail being mortally hurt by an explosion of Gunpowder in a house in Ramsey, on the 12th of May, being May day, old Style , was buried May 16 1756. N.B. My Dear Relation The Revd Mr Wilks his son was killed by the fall of the said House & buried at KK Michael, and several others were dangerously scalded & wounded by the above accident.

Daniel KERUISH Servant in Baldromma attempting on Sunday morning Oct 16th wth some others to go down the Hough near Maughold Head to gather Dullice slipp’d from the precipice, & his corpse Being found miserably bruis’d was buried Oct 17 1757 From a profanity of thy Sabbath’s, & from sudden, unprepared & eternal Death Good Lord ! Deliver us Amen

Mr Edward CHRISTIAN of Lewaigue returning home from Castletown Nov 23rd at night & attempting to pass Mullin y Quinney River, it being then high, perish’d unfortunately & his Corpse being found on the 25th was interr’d here. Nov 27 1759

A ship bound from Cork for Glasgow having been in a Storm, stranded at Ramsey Dec 4th at Night. One Seaman together with six women & six Children passengers (Names unknown). Wives & Children to Soldiers belonging tothe first Battalion of Royal Scotch & one other Woman named Margt, Wife to Wm Hutchinson a Soldier in Genl Handasyd’s Regiment perished & were all buried here Dec 6 1760

Mary CHRISTIAN 9 years old deceas’d by the bite of a mad dog Jun 18 1769

William CHRISTIAN who was drowned by bathing at Carrick y Inneen on Sunday Aug 3rd Aug 4 1788

William DAVISON who perished by Sea at Cornah, on the night of 9th Nov & a Person name unknown Nov 11 1793.
