Despite the inscription on the memorial plaque on Cpt. Hugh Crowe's monument that states that his father Edmund Crowe died in 1809 age 79, Constance Radcliffe had a different interpretation. See page 125 of"Ramsey 1600-1800" by Constance Radcliffe.
The father of the Edmund Crowe who married Judith teare was Ewan Crowe 1696-1776 who married three times. First to Anne Cowle who died 1737. There were three sons of this marriage: Robert Chr. 1732, Ewan (1734-1799) who married Catherine Crow and of special interest Edmund (chr. 1736-1809) who married Judith Crowe. Of the second marriage to Kath Steven there was a son William chr. 1739. Edwan Crowe then married a third time to Jane Crowe als Guttery (died 1754) widow of John Crowe. (no further issue). Available wills of all the people mentioned above are transcribed on Brian Lawson's site.
Supporting this interpretation is the fact that Mary Crowe als Callow whose will is transcribed mentions no surviving children, only Callow relatives. Also the will (not yet transcribed) of Cpt. William Crowe (1772-1800), Capt. Hugh Crowe's brother, left a small bequest to his uncle Ewan Crowe (1734-1799) There seems to be no Ewan Crowe, the son of William Crowe and Mary Callow.
If this William Crowe's will can be found, all the confusion can likely be put to rest.
It would seem that the executors of Capt. Hugh Crowe's estate picked the wrong Edmund Crowe when they were preparing the memorial plaque some thirty years after his death.
