unlike England the Manx usually married by licence rather than Banns (maybe 99% by licence) these had to be paid for and were issued by the Bishop's surrogates (a way of giving some clergy an extra salary) - I am not however aware that these records have survived - I presume any licence would have to be given to the officiating clergyman who under the regulations had to state in the parish reg whether the marriage was by licence I doubt if he returned the said licence to the Bishop or that the surrogate kept duplicates if so they would be part of the diocesan records most of which have now been transferred to the Manx Museum so try them - enquiries@mnh.gov.im
