I am also researching the Blacks in the Isle of Man and after reading the preceding threads I think my tree is a little awry. My G. Grandfather was John Alexander Black who was born in Douglas IOMan in 1850. He was the son of James Black b.1818 in Douglas IOMan and Jesse Mather b. 1827 in Scotland.
Now after finding on the 1851 census living at 1 Athol Square Ann Black [Corkhill] widow aged 70 and James and Jesse Black with child John not yet 1 year old and then on the 1861 census these two families as neighbours in St. George Street I assumed that Ann was James' mother. I was curious as to how Ann seemed to have given birth to Benjamin at age 56! After reading the previous threads I would think that he was obviously the son of Catherine but of course that would mean I have the wrong mother to James Black. Can anybody help me unravel this mystery.
Tom.
