A W Moore obviously thought there were problems - "This name is placed amongst the exotic surnames because no Celtic or Scandinavian etymology appears to be adducible for it. Its early occurrence with the prefix Mac, however, is an argument in favour of its being of native origin."
if it is local and Celtic then Thomson suggests that pre Settlement Ulster is a good place to look for such names
