ship's passenger lists don't exist - names only been collected since H&S decided it might be a good idea to know who drowned - remember the old (or not so old) cards at the IoMSPCo , who bothered to check the names ? Ships' crew are howeverer recorded

Coal merchants - that period has no good directories but looking at early teleohone directories (if they exist I've never used them) might help - obviously you can search the 1901 census for carters etc
