The 6d legacy is not hardheartedness but a legal device dating from around the 15th C (when 6d was worth something) to prevent children from being cut off with no support (again I thought explained on Manxnotebook) - however it then developed as a legal device in case he had forgotten someone who could otherwise sue or in this case to prevent a law case (the Manx being then as litigious as today's Americans)
