Governor Cornelius Smelt
Many years ago when I was employed as an apprentice joiner for a local building company We were tasked with exhuming the remains of Governor Smelt from St. Mary's Church in Castletown Square (right next to the unfinished Smelt Monument). The remains of the coffin were then transported and laid to rest in a temporary crypt in St. Peters churchyard in Onchan.
I am interested to know if this is where the remains of Governor Smelt still lie to this day or has his remains been moved somewhere else?
Although this all took place about 22years ago, I have some vivid memories of the eagle head shaped brass nameplate that was on top of the remains of his coffin, the brass nameplate was in perfect condition displaying his name and date of birth and death.
Thanks in advance for any info.
