A few snippets of info that are at this site:

Methodist Minister; served in Glennie, Homer, Crump, Metamora, Lapeer, Bay
City, Prescott, Maple Ridge, Alger, Turner, Saganing (where he preached
the Gospel to the Indians), and Freeland. He is buried behind the
Methodist Church in Freeland. In 1903 he established the Glennie
Methodist Church. He was first ordained in the Free Will Baptist Church,
and was also ordained in the Presbyterian Church.
When his first wife died, he hired someone to watch the baby. He
later married her and had seven more children with Rosabelle Lattimer

From a letter from George and Lee Gawne, 31 May 1993: [George Gawne was
a son of W.F. Gawne, and a grandson of Franklin]
"They were no doubt married in Canada - Can't find the date. She also
may be of French Indian descent. She definitely had some Indian blood.
As I said before they came to Michigan when my husband's father W.F.
Gawne was 8 yrs old. They farmed for a living, as did most in the area.
He filled in the food supply hunting and fishing in season. Sounds like
he was master of his house-hold as she prepared his meals at what-ever
hour requested, day or night. No other insights on their lives."

From a letter from Brian Gawne to Melvin Gawne, 27 April 1992:
"I haven't been able to check into this but I think Franklin was
entitled to a medal fro the part he played in the Fenian Uprising of
1867-69. I think he was in the Lincoln Co. Militia at this time."

Personal reminiscence of Melvin Gawne about his grandfather: There was a
rumor that Franklin served time in the Canadian Services, possibly the
Canadian Cavalry. He got into some kind of trouble and shot his
commanding officer. I remember that he always wore a suit, and had a
bag of peppermints in his pockets.

I suggest, if you don't find this family in the 1880 U. S. census, that you try the 1881 Canada census. Both are available at Family search.org.

Be sure that you check the information above by finding birth records, baptismal records, census, etc. Don't just take for granted that another researcher has done careful work.

Good luck
