My Great Grandfather was Walter Corlett Cleator, born 1863 in Cronkbourne, IoM, christened 24 May 1863 in Braddan and was a plasterer. He married Elizabeth Jane Cavendish 1/6/1886 at St Georges, Braddan. They had 5 children, including my Grandfather and moved to Bolton, Lancashire sometime between 1895 and 1901. Elizabeth Jane was not blind but mentally ill, according to my mother, and Walter deserted her sometime after the 1901 census and finished up in the USA, where he died. As Donna says, Cleator is quite a common name in the Isle of Man and plastering is a common occupation but there may be a link.
